I had the pleasure of attending an Australian Citizenship ceremony recently. Here is the pledge/oath that the new citizens recite aloud:
I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people,
whose democratic beliefs I share,
whose rights and liberties I respect, and
whose laws I will uphold and obey.
Simple and powerful stuff.
As the presiding administrator emphasised in his speech – ‘the above provides you with rights but also with responsibilities, while happy to accept the former you must also be willing to fulfil the latter’.
I pondered the potential meaning and application of the above and I believe we all should aspire, and be held, to similar standards.
Whether as employees, members of a community or family or indeed; citizens of Ireland, the EU, UK, US etc… we have rights and liberties of course, but we also have responsibilities – we should never forget that.
